And when the handsome, dangerous stranger reappears, it’s only a matter of time before Payton is ignoring every single (obvious) red flag about him. So when a strange man breaks into her home and strikes up a conversation (of all things!), Payton is surprisingly okay with it. The story follows Payton (27), a woman who ran from her abusive stepfather ten years ago, and has been living a secluded life in the shadows ever since. But it was definitely a spice-filled, suspenseful ride, and pure entertainment. The lovable mobster at the heart of it is an extremely possessive, criminally obsessed stalker with an overbearing, protective streak… but I was completely okay with that 98% of the time. The spice and instant connection between these characters was intense, and the chemistry leapt off the page.
I have no idea why I loved this unhinged, obsessive antihero so much, but it was an immensely entertaining ride from start to finish. This one was a WHOLE other level of messed up, so absurd and over the top that I was cackling at the ridiculousness. It was all kinds of addictive and an absolutely fantastic read, so I knew I had to go back to the start and check out Nero. If King was unhinged, then I don’t even know what to call this one, lol! My introduction to this author’s work was King, the second book in this dark and delicious mafia romance series.
